Our Vision
Our vision is for children and young people from families affected by mental illness to have full and happy childhoods.
Our Purpose
To support children and young people, 8 to 16 years old, from families affected by mental illness, by providing camps and other activities that are fun, healthy, positive and safe.
About Camp Kookaburra
Camp Kookaburra was the vision of Dianne Madden, who through personal experience identified an unmet need in the community, that of the lack of support for children living in families affected by mental illness, where the children take on a caring role within the family.
The Camp Kookaburra project was established in 2000 and since then has successfully run annual camps and Fun days for children 8 - 16 years old from the Sutherland and St George areas.
Dianne Madden is a worthy recipient of the 2008 NSW "Women of the Year" for her commitment and dedication to Camp Kookaburra, and the children that benefit from program.
What Camp Kookaburra Offers:
- A weekend camp for children in years 3 and 4 at school - March
- A weekend camp for children in Years 5 and 6 at school - September
- A weekend camp for children in years 7 to 10 at school - November
- 3 holiday programs
- Family Picnic day
- Regular newsletters
- Links to other support services
The camp and activity days allow the children the opportunity to have a break from their caring roles. It also provides them with support by informing them of local support services that can assist them in their day to day lives and suggest ways to deal with their sometimes difficult family situations.
The camp provides the children with the opportunity to talk about their issues, learn coping skills, build confidence, and meet other children with similar family situations.
Camp Kookaburra believes that investing in children is the most compassionate and economic investment we can make. Whether it is done financially, emotionally or by lessening the stigma and feelings of isolation, both the community and these children will reap the rewards.
